3D Scanning and Reverse Engineering Laboratory

The laboratory focuses on object digitization using laser 3D scanning technology and on both contact and non-contact object measurement. Through reverse engineering, it is possible to create a digital model of a real object (component or device) and subsequently manufacture it.

Laboratory equipment:

  • Portable articulated measuring arm FARO Quantum X with a reach of 2 meters and a Laser Line Probe FAROBlu xP scanner.
  • Portable articulated measuring arm FaroArm Platinum with a reach of 1.5 meters and a Faro Laser Line Probe scanner.

The portable articulated measuring arms enable the measurement or digitization of components and devices directly in the production environment using a magnetic base or a stable Softcase tripod. An additional 8th axis – a rotary table – is also available, which significantly speeds up the scanning process. The arm collects data by touch using a probe located at the end of the handle – two probes are available, one with a diameter of 6 mm and the other with a diameter of 3 mm – or via the Laser Line Probe FAROBlu xP laser scanner. The scanner offers non-contact scanning capabilities, fast point cloud acquisition, and excellent resolution and accuracy, allowing the scanning of objects with complex shapes. Digitized objects are processed in PolyWorks InspectorTM Premium ModelerTM Standard software. Digital models and technical documentation can be created through reverse engineering using Creo Parametric software.

Applications of the portable articulated measuring arm FARO:

Dimensional inspection according to production documentation, as well as measurement of position and shape, with the ability to measure deviations against the 3D model in real time. Non-contact and contact measurements are ideal for single-part and small-batch production, production ramp-up, or product inspection directly at the production line. 3D scanning and digitization of components or entire devices can be performed directly in the production environment using the non-contact laser scanner.
